   1. Background (brief history)

UNALA was initiated by UNFPA in 2014, and is managed by Anak Bangsa Merajut Harapan Foundation (Angsamerah). Its slogan is “You(th) decide, we provide”

Youth in Indonesia often has no access to RSH information and services, and UNALA was created to address such gap. It is, therefore, a social franchising network that aims at providing SRH services for youth in Yogyakarta, through general practitioners in private clinics that are trained to address SRH in a youth-friendly manner. Moreover, Unala ensures confidentiality, a non-judgmental approach, and affordable prices.

   2. Areas of expertise

In its clinics, Unala offers:

  • Youth-friendly health counselling that is qualified and confidential

  • Physical examinations

  • Referral to specialists

  • Referral to laboratories

  • Referral to reproductive health service networking.

It also allows for youth to book appointments and ask questions online, in addition to a hotline (also for questions). It addresses SRH issues but also psychological matters such as stress, depression, bullying and even addictions, such as drug abuse.

   3. Strengths in the ICPD

Unala aims to empower youth, allowing them to make their own decisions regarding their reproductive health. It then addresses SRH rights, gender equality and youth development (since it also addresses social issues).

   4. Quality assurance/ previous evaluation

The program was created in a partnership with the UNFPA office in Indonesia, which still oversees its operations.
