Art and Alternative House Laboratory – Youth House
   1. Background (brief history)

LATA was created in 2012 by the Government of the Iztacalco Borough in Mexico. It aims at countering crime rates, addictions and unemployment rates through a space that convenes arts, technology and skills training. With such programs, the Youth House offers a range of opportunities for youth, which contributes for their professional development.

   2. Areas of expertise

The organization offers free courses in three-month modules in the themes of:

  • Community journalism

  • Guitar, piano and break dance

  • Theater,

  • Painting

  • Radio and digital photography,

  • Artisanal recycling, among others.

The themes change from time to time and are created according to requests from young participants.

Furthermore, LATA also organizes concerts and special events to attract youth to the courses and spread the word about these courses, also generating a space for community socialization and for the integration of more vulnerable youth.

 

   3. Strengths in the ICPD

LATA acts strongly in the demographic dividend subject, by integrating youth and involving them in cultural activities, in addition to promoting employment opportunities and their development.

 

   4. Quality assurance/ previous evaluation

LATA’s quality and work was recognized by the National Award to Good Practices 2014, which was carried out by a partnership among Fundación Idea, UNFPA, ImJuve and USAID.
